Ms. McDonald uses positive reinforcement to increase student’s intrinsic motivation for using desired behavior. It is her belief that positive reinforcement establish a strong relationship between the teacher and student built upon kindness and respect for one another.

Ms. McDonald has been using restorative practices in her classroom for over two years. Incorporating restorative practices in the classroom focuses on repairing harm caused rather than punishing the individual. This develops empathy, communication skills, trust, and a sense of community among the students in the classroom.

Ms. McDonald utilizes social-emotional learning during morning crew and throughout the school day. She believes that teaching students about big emotions and providing them with a toolbox on how to handle big emotions will create independence and confidence within each student. Social-emotional learning develops communication skills, empathy, problem solving skills, strong relationships, and establishes trust among the students and teacher.
