Student Work

Writing Growth

This particular student came into second grade with significant areas of growth in their writing abilities. This student struggled with orthographic mapping to accurately write each sound heard in the word. Additionally, this student was having difficulty with their spatial awareness when writing. The first example shows a piece of work from the beginning of second grade. The second example is from the middle of second grade and shows significant improvement in orthographic mapping and in spatial awareness.

Reading Growth

This student came into second grade lacking confidence in reading. This student is able to identify phonemes, but has difficulty blending and segmenting them. At the beginning of the year, this student scored low on the NWEA exam in ELA. As a result, this student was given extra support by being placed into Ms. McDonald’s small reading skills group. This student has made significant growth through practicing blending and segmenting phonemes and using orthographic mapping to relate the phonemes to graphemes.

Math Growth

This student came into second grade feeling confused about basic math principles. This student has been a part of Ms. McDonald’s Bridges Intervention small group from October to February, and has made significant progress in her math scores. Below is an example of an assessment on bundling and unbundling groups of tens. Also included is an example of the students growth chart for their NWEA math scores. Since the beginning of this year to the Spring trimester, this student has improved eighteen points overall, showing significant growth.
