Differentiation

Ms. McDonald analyzes data from pre and post assessments, as well as NWEA testing data, to form small math intervention groups and small reading groups.

Tier I

For Tier I differentiation, Ms. McDonald utilizes:

  • preferential seating

  • breaking work up into smaller parts

  • re-reading and rephrasing directions

  • extra modeling

  • extra guided practice

  • use of notes and anchor charts

  • creative extensions (adding illustrations, writing a song, etc.)

  • varying work according to level

  • providing multiple exposure to texts

  • use of manipulatives

  • annotating texts

Tier II

For Tier II differentiation, Ms. McDonald utilizes:

  • small reading skills groups using methods based on the Science of Reading

  • small math groups using the Bridges Intervention program

  • scribing for students with writing needs

  • sentence stems

  • assistance segmenting and blending sounds for word spelling

  • reading and re-reading directions

  • use of manipulatives

  • color coding and highlighting texts

Tier III

For Tier III differentiation, Ms. McDonald utilizes:

  • individualized conferencing around work

  • one-on-one time focusing on students individualized needs

  • sticker charts for a targeted goal

  • check ins/outs to start the day strong

  • earned breaks

  • collaboration with specialist for response to intervention purposes

  • analyzing assessment data to monitor growth and determine referrals for response to intervention programs
